ChipLitFest 2018

If you’ve considered a life in the Cotswolds, somewhere with vitality and a strong, welcoming community, look no further than Chipping Norton. Or ‘Chippy’, as it’s known to the locals.

Chipping Norton is a small market town in the beautiful Cotswold Hills in Oxfordshire, roughly 12 miles southwest of Banbury and 18 miles northwest of Oxford. It first thrived off the back of a prosperous wool trade in the Middle Ages, acquiring for itself one of the finest churches in Cotswold stone and a pretty market square.

In addition, Chipping Norton boasts a magisterial town hall, a picturesque row of 17th Century almshouses, fancy boutiques, quaint pubs and a lido open to one and all in the spring and summer months. The town is noted for its generosity within its own community and its welcoming many more besides when it hosts annually what is fast becoming one of the most prestigious literary festivals in the country – The Chipping Norton Literary Festival (otherwise known as ‘ChipLitFest’).

This year’s festival – ChipLitFest 2018 – runs from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th April and will mark the town’s seventh hosting. Since it began in 2012, it has grown in stature. This years' billing builds on past success with the organisers pulling together a terrific international line-up of literary talent. More than fifty authors, publishers, booksellers and literary agents will be booked to entertain, inform and elevate the written word. With book swaps, reading corners, workshops and discussion forums. For details of events, consult the festivals’ website at www.chiplitfest.com.

The festival’s events are hosted in many of the town’s landmark buildings, including the town hall, the library, the characterful stone Methodist Church, a bookshop and Chipping Norton’s iconic theatre. It’s very unusual for a town the size of Chipping Norton to have a theatre and yet it manages to pull off an eclectic programme of live theatre, music, dance and comedy, culminating in the famous annual pantomime, which attracts visitors from across the globe, lured by its charm and tradition. The theatre also screens a wide range of contemporary, classic, art house and foreign language films throughout the year.
