Packing to move? Let us guide you!

Packing up your things and moving to a new flat or house doesn’t have to be a dreadful experience: all you need to do is follow our guide and you’ll find yourself comfortably settled in your new abode.

Moving is something that all of us are familiar with. Some people find it exciting while others find it exhausting and distressing. Whether you like it or not, it is something that you need to face at some point in your life.

The success of your move will depend on a lot of things; planning all the tasks ahead of time and trying to avoid mistakes along the way. These will help you experience a smooth and successful move!

Fortunately, other people have undergone the same process and experienced great success with these tried-and-tested moving tips. By making sure that everything is ready before, during and after the move, and by having a positive attitude, your upcoming endeavour will be a lot easier or even fun if you want to be.

Today, we’ll focus on giving you packing tips while reminding you of other moving tips that will make things easier on your end (how to prepare yourself for the move, how to move with pets, how to perfectly pack your items for storage and more<).

Life is uncertain. This means that no matter how perfect your plans and preparations are, something may or may not go wrong. Everybody is different too, so you need to determine if a certain tip is applicable to your or not: perhaps you just need to make some modifications.

Organise your things before you move. So that you won’t be cramming when moving day is near, start going through your belongings a few weeks before the scheduled day if possible. Work your way slowly but surely, making sure that each room is checked.

List all the big things that you will not be bringing with you in your new home like bulky furniture and perhaps any items that you plan to get rid of, that way you can contact a rubbish removal company to dispose of these items for you.

Categorise your items into three; donate, sell, bin. Donate the items that you are not using but are still in good working condition. If you prefer, you can sell them or online if you want to earn some extra money. And for the rest of the things that you need to throw away, let the removal company handle it for you.

Establish which items should be loaded last and unloaded first. So that you can settle down in your new home as soon as you arrive, identify the items that you need to unload from the removals truck first as soon as it arrives. Make sure these items are loaded last from your old home.

Assign a special area in your home for valuable items. Think about items with sentimental value such as important documents, jewellery, family photos or family heirlooms. You need to assign a room where you can keep them all in one place and inform other people (members of the removals team, family members, friends, etc.) to refrain from packing and loading things from that room.

Keep in mind your new home. If you have the benefit of viewing your new home before moving, place your items in boxes and label those boxes with the areas in your new home where they will be placed. This way, unpacking will be much easier because your items will end up in the rooms where they should be.

Use the right kind of boxes. Some things are just better when used the right way. For instance, heavy items like plates, glasses or books are best when packed in small boxes. Lighter items such as foldable clothes, pillows and linen are best when placed inside bigger ones.

Always take into consideration the people who will be carrying your items. Do not make their job harder than it is. Avoid putting heavy items in large boxes because they will have difficulty carrying it (this is actually a common complaint among professional movers). Not only is it difficult to carry a large and heavy box: there is a big chance that the box and the items inside it might break.

Stack it right. When putting items inside your boxes, put the heavier ones at the bottom and the lighter ones at the top.

One room, one box. Avoid placing items from different rooms in one box. This will help you unpack things easier too.

Label the boxes properly. So that the removals staff will know where to put your boxes, label the box with the room it is destined to. It would be helpful if you will put a description of the items placed inside the boxes. For instance, if there’s a box labelled ‘FRAGILE - wine glasses with kitchen’, the staff will carefully carry it to and from the truck and place it in your new kitchen.

Secure your boxes properly. Make sure the top and bottom of the boxes are secured properly. Wrap it all the way around with tape so that there will be no chance the openings will give way.

Make an inventory. Create a list of all the items that will be moved, in what boxes they are packed and to what rooms in the new home they will be transferred to.
